Last week in pottery class, I finally finished a tile that I made just to test a decorating technique.
The thing is, you paint the piece completely with decorating pottery slip while it’s still wet and, after waiting for it to dry just a bit, you take a gouge and create the design just as if you were preparing a linoleum sheet for engraving. I guess we could say it’s a kind of sgraffito technique. After the biscuit firing, you dip it in clear glaze, stoneware-fire it et voilà! I reckon the result is quite attractive, isn’t it?
I’m currently modelling a big plate which I’ll decorate in the same way. I hope I have it finished soon.
