As many of you will know, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair is the super big event for both illustrators and publishers in Europe. I had been told about it in the past, but it wasn’t until I attended the second edition of Picturecamp in Atapuerca, that I was finally conviced to go. So, I updated my portfolio, grabbed a bunch of business cards, got a squire called Susana to support me in battle and headed off to Italy.
I must admit I was a little bit nervous about the whole thing, especially about showing my portfolio and little project to publishers and getting feedback in person, and even more so after going through the gates the first day of the fair – it was only 9:30 in the morning and the illustrators wall was already covered.
However, and despite the overwhelming experience the whole fair was, I’m very glad and proud of myself for summoning the courage to show my work to other professionals and accepting their feedback in a positive way. It was a very enriching adventure which will help me improve my portfolio before going back next year.
Plus, being able to see some lovely faces I met back in September in Atapuerca was both delightful and very reassuring. Please, do check out their portfolios because they’re all amazing:
